Compared to the 200-300 users in 1991 and the 7000 IRC-chatters in 1994 the growth is certainly extraordinary.

The following Top-Channel Statistics were created with hourly data from Feb., 13th, 1998 to July, 12th, 1998. All channels with at least 50 members were counted each hour. Ranks are calculated using the mean over all channel-data.

  • How those figures were created

With various methods I was monitoring the big four networks (see my IRC page for history and details).
Right now a Perl script is doing the job: Socip.pl. Every five minutes data is fed into a Round-Robin-Database.
Another script. Socip_graphs.pl uses MRTG to calculate graphs and finally creates a webpage.

The main server creating those figures and running the necessary programs has been located from 2002 to December 2007 at University of Mainz, Sociology Dept., it was working with FreeBSD 6.1. It finally died because of a power supply failure.
But all those data would not have been possible without my "Bompf"-Server at the University of Rostock in Northern Germany (Sociology Department), who ran from 1998 until April 2003 and did a good job. It was a Pentium 5/120 from HP running Debian Linux (2.2 Potato).
Since a couple of years the responsible server is located in St.Louis, MO, operating system is Debian Linux stable (Buster - started with Etch, former server was located since 2007 in Frankfurt, Germany).
